The year has passed so quickly and it is hard to believe our little baby girl is now 5 years old. Azaria turned 5 on October 26th. She is growing and growing and really looks like such a pretty little girl now. She is long and tall, she loves to have her hair in braids, with barrettes and bows. Azaria even got her first doll for her birthday, a doll with black hair and two pony tails. Azaria really likes to play with her doll (in fact, as I type she is tossing her doll about now.)
Azaria continues to have daily seizures, and she is having the big convulsions that require emergency care about every seven to ten days. We are in the midst of adjusting Azaria's medications. She was recently weaned from the anti-convulsant Vigabatrin, we are currently increasing her dose of Lamictal, and she remains steady with her Zonegran. We are looking at possibly trying the Ketogenic Diet again, another option is the VNS implant if Azaria's seizures don't get under control.
Over the year, we haven't noticed much progress in Azaria's physical abilities. We gave her a long break from exercise routines and physical therapy, mostly because of all the seizure activity. She is in a home based school program, her teacher Marlene comes to visit once a week and her physical therapist Amanda comes to visit twice a month. We are working on getting Azaria to weight bear on her legs, and to sit unassisted. She wears braces on her feet/legs, a brace on her left hand to help keep it open, and a brace around her trunk to help keep her upright.
Azaria is such an amazing little girl. She continues to bless us with her loving and peaceful presence. She is such an angelic little girl, who is usually happy and content to play with her doll, watch her little brother Aidan run in circles, or to sit with her Daddy, or to listen to Josh Groban with her Mommy.
Wishing everyone a safe, blessed and Happy Holiday!

October 2007
A long overdue update...the last update was from the Bahama's in July! What a great and wonderful time Azaria had. She spent 4 days in the water with dolphins! Words can not express how amazing the dolphin experience was... To sum it up in a few words, I will say that during the time we spent there, Azaria was seizure free! Thats right, not one seizure until we flew back to California!

A good scare...
We planned for a quiet and relaxing weekend. Life has been so busy and
hectic lately, we thought we should have some quiet time. We were
thinking of going up to the Sequoias for a day, maybe even camp
overnight but instead we opted to try to sleep in and just hang out at
home. Early this morning, Azaria started having a very hard seizure and
it wouldn't stop. I thought this might be it, and I hated the thoughts
that went through my mind.

I received Azaria's handicap placard in the mail today. This is the thing we put in the car window so that we can park in the handicap section of the parking lot. I had mixed feelings when I opened the package from the DMV and saw the big blue placard in the envelope. I took it out and stared at it. I wasn't happy to see it. Then I remembered the day I tried to get Azaria out of the car and into her wheelchair in a regular parking space. Frustrating. Even though this blue placard makes parking easier, I didn't like seeing the words DISABLED written across it, those words stung me. |

January update: Azaria has been doing well, she is smiling a lot lately even though her
seizures have continued everyday. She is having fewer lately, usually
2-5 small seizures per day and the big, ugly seizures have been fewer
and further apart (knock on wood). When Azaria does have a seizure, she
amazingly smiles through it. After each jerk or jolt she brightly
smiles at us, almost saying to us "it's ok". She is such a trooper and
strong little girl! |

Recently, Azaria's website received a lot of attention thanks to Barrie North of Compass Design and Joomla! Shack , and Cory Webb of How to Joomla! and Joomla!Form.com Thanks to these wonderful people, Azaria's site received many new visitors. We received many well wishes and prayers, and a total
of $600 in donations within a months time! TJ and I are SO thankful to
Barrie North, Cory Webb, and everyone at Joomla! Shack who passed on Azaria's website, as well as all of the wonderful people who visited Azaria's site. This was a very unexpected and pleasant surprise. Every day that we opened
her email, we received notification of a donation and/or prayers. We became overwhelmed with gratitude and we are so very thankful. To those who have given us their gifts, you
have no idea how you have touched our hearts. Your gracious giving has helped
Azaria continue her therapies, medications and continued planning for her upcoming dolphin
therapy trip this summer. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!
